For the defence industry in particular, the ability to attract, develop and retain highly skilled people has never been more important. Defence programmes are becoming increasingly complex, requiring expertise across advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, cyber, systems integration and data-driven engineering. At the same time, the sector faces well-documented challenges around an ageing workforce, skills shortages in key technical disciplines and increasing competition for talent. The opportunity is significant: by investing in skills today, we can build the workforce that will deliver the sovereign capabilities, technological innovation and operational readiness the UK will depend on in the decades ahead.

As a British defence company, Babcock is committed to developing the highly skilled workforce needed to support the armed forces and strengthen the UK's defence industrial base. Our people maintain and manage critical assets, from submarines and warships to military vehicles, training systems and defence infrastructure. We support apprenticeships, undergraduate placements, graduate schemes, leadership programmes and continuous professional development, creating pathways for people to build rewarding careers while contributing to work that has a direct impact on national security.

One area of focus for Babcock is our apprenticeship programme, and we are proud to be among the country’s top apprenticeship employers, ranking 12th nationally in the Department for Education’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers 2026. The value of an apprenticeship is rightfully being increasingly recognised by the Government and students alike. For our 2026 early careers intake alone, we received more than 33,000 applications for 830 places, underlining both the demand for these opportunities and the importance of expanding access to high-quality skills training.

Every year, hundreds of apprentices join Babcock across a wide range of disciplines and levels, gaining hands-on experience alongside industry experts while working towards recognised qualifications. These programmes are helping to build vital skills in engineering, manufacturing, nuclear, marine, digital and project management specialisms. Many of our senior leaders, technical experts and managers began their careers as apprentices, demonstrating the long-term value of investing in talent from the very start of someone’s career journey.

We are also committed to increasing diversity and inclusion across engineering and defence. The challenges facing our industry require a wide range of perspectives, experiences and ideas. By engaging with schools, colleges, universities and community organisations, our aim is to raise aspiration and understanding of STEM whilst broadening awareness of engineering careers and encouraging more people from underrepresented backgrounds to consider opportunities within the sector. A more diverse workforce strengthens innovation, improves problem-solving and helps ensure that defence and engineering careers are accessible to the broadest possible talent pool.
