Understanding the challenge

The UK’s engineering and manufacturing sector is facing a critical skills gap that Enginuity is working to address:

  • Demand for skilled engineering and manufacturing professionals far exceeds the supply
  • Rapid technological advances are outpacing workforce capabilities and skills
  • A significant portion of the current skilled workforce is nearing retirement
  • Traditional education and training programs are struggling to keep up with the pace of change in the sector.
Understanding the challenge image

Our history

Though we've been known by many names, our expertise in addressing the skills challenges within the UK's engineering and manufacturing sector has consistently defined our history.

1964

Our origins lie in the formation of the Engineering Industry Training Board in 1964.

1988

We gained charitable status when we became the Engineering Training Authority (Entra) in 1988.

1996

A merger with the Marine and Engineering Training Association (M&ETA) in 1996 saw us become EMTA.

1997

In 1997, we launched EAL part of the Enginuity Group, as the specialist skills, awarding, and assessment services organisation.

2003

In 2003, a further merger with the Science Technology and Mathematics Council created SEMTA, a sector skills council for the advanced manufacturing and engineering sector.

2014

When government funding for Sector Skills Councils ceased in 2014, we were able to continue supporting UK engineering and manufacturing; striving to ensure the sector has the highly skilled, globally competitive workforce needed.

2019-2020

In 2019, we set off on a journey to become a self-funded organisation. In February 2020, we rebranded from SEMTA to Enginuity.

  • Supporting engineering and manufacturing employers in discovering new sources of skills
  • Providing insights and recommendations on the skills that are increasingly in demand, so businesses, sectors, and government can plan ahead
  • Connecting organisations to ensure technical education is fit for purpose and keeps pace with change.
